Tech Tip Tuesday - How to Protect Your Identity, Personal Data and Property

Our friends at Pacific Center for Advanced Technical Training (PCATT) shared this resource from Tom’s Guide a couple of days ago. The “What to Do If…” section covers some common issues like ransomware and identity theft. It also lists some tips for protecting yourself. It’s the perfect link to send someone asks, “Hey! You do computer stuff. What do you recommend?”

Tech Tip Thursday – RansomFree

If you’re worried about ransomware, check out RansomFree from Cybereason, a real-time ransomware detection and response software that can spot most strains of Ransomware before it starts encrypting files and alert the user to take action. Good computer hygiene (e.g. unique credentials, keeping your systems patched, current backups, etc) is always recommended but if you are looking for a specific solution to ransomware, try RansomFree for FREE.

Tech Tip Tuesday – Ransomeware Overview

A group of security researchers put together a Google Doc with 118 identified named Ransomeware types. They have file extensions, comments and links to decryptors, if they exist. The best way to stay safe from ransomeware is to perform frequent backups (offsite if possible). The next best thing is to NOT open files from unsolicited senders.

Tech Tip Tuesday – “Locky” Ransomeware

Locky is the the newest variant of ransomware making the rounds on the Interwebs. The most common attack vector is tricking a user into enabling macros in a Word document, which downloads a file to encrypt your files. You can get all your files back for the low price of 0.5 to 1.0 bitcoin ($210-$420). Naked Security from Sophos has provides some strategies to keep you secure.
